Final Artist Statement #1

My name is Carlos Trigo and I am a digital artist. My project consisted of 12 images that represented a native of another world far away from us. Being from Jupiter, he is just trying to explore the wonders and beauties of Earth's nature but also the mundane activities that us humans partake in.

I got inspiration for this character because I have always had a fascination for what is beyond the stars and outside of this world, so I created another perspective for that same idea. The final product was an extraterrestrial having a fascination for what is beyond his planet, pleasing his curiosity and visiting ours.

The most vigorous aspect for me was trying to select only 6 activities and locations for this alien to visit, due to Earth having many different possibilities that any other-worldly tourists should visit to fully understand humans and how we live. However, I ended up choosing the ones I thought were the most appealing visually (the Uyuni Salt Flats or the streets of New York City) and the ones that represented mundane activities that the public would be able to relate to themselves (eating pizza, going to a party, or riding a rollercoaster).

I had complications in giving this character much emotion, but I was able to explore color as a way to express feelings and the mood of the distinct situations. Since my character's skin was already dark colors, I tried to make the other items around him explode with a variety of colors and combinations. Not only this, but I wanted the alien himself to show different emotions through his eyes, by changing the color of them depending on what activity he was partaking in.

Although the Photoshop process went smoothly, the Illustrator process was done more leisurely. Since I had this beautiful, intricate and elaborate scenes, it was hard for me to make a drawing representing all of these details that made the scene what it was. Specially for someone like me that has never had any drawing or illustrating experience, this was a challenging yet interestingly pleasurable way to explore my artistic prowess.

Without further to say, I hope you enjoy my creation.
