For this project, I have a bunch of ideas about what my final sound is going to look like. Or at least, what direction I am going to take to work on this.
Since I still do not know the sounds that the rest of the people have submitted, it is going to be hard to start getting some ideas. However, I do know the sounds that I recorded so I can have an idea of what I want to work with. Each of my 5 sounds were recorded in a different day and during a completely different time of the day too. I made sure that this was all recorded naturally during my daily life, and without overthinking it. This is because I want to try and tell a story throughout my composition, trying to depict the life of a college student and summarize it in 4 minutes and 33 seconds. I believe that even if the music does not seem like it makes sense, it can tell a story. This is just the same with drawn art, it is art as long as it's thought provoking in anyway. My main inspiration for this is John Cage and his different compositions.
With the making of 4'33", John Cage managed to create a silent atmosphere for the audience to listen to the ambiance and pay attention to it. This is genius to me, because he managed to create a piece that would be completely different every time you play it or listen to it. The human brain was able to create "music" our of silence, that is how great the brain is. This is what I am trying to do with my piece, make it so that each brain that listens to it would think of something similar, but slightly different. I want people to talk about it and find a similar main theme, but discuss different specific
thoughts that my piece created on them.
Besides this, my other inspiration for this would be Pink Floyd. This experimental band does a lot of things similar to John Cage. Although most of their music is - well - traditionally musical, they also have a bunch of moments in their music that seems a less conventional and experimental.
This happens a lot specifically in their projects "The Dark Side of The Moon" and "Wish You Were Here". This is going to be another inspiration for me. Overall, my final composition is going to tell a story about the life of a college student, with a style that resembles John Cage's pioneering ideas and Pink Floyd's experimental musicality.
